Session 1: Being Smart About College Planning


Higher education sticker shock. Rising student debt. Parents questioning the value of the college investment. For some families, it is the most important financial decision they will make for their child or grandchild. In many cases, it will be the most expensive. All too often, however, college planning is treated as a simple savings calculation, instead of a coordinated wealth planning strategy.

In this session, Sean Moore of Florida Prepaid will explore strategies to prepare financially for college costs. Understand how to utilize and prepare for the financial aid in the most effective way and what strategies to employ to best situate your clients. This session reviews the structure of convertible bonds; features/benefits; ways to use convertible bonds in portfolio construction; placement options within an asset allocation; how convertibles can help advisors manage risk and volatility; how convertibles perform in rising rate times. Session 3A: BlackRock - Is Your Equity Portfolio Upside Down? Revisiting the Importance of Downside Protection.


Today’s investment portfolios have a lot more risk than advisors and clients realize. Understanding the trends in portfolio construction and asset allocation are vital to building proper portfolios. The importance of limiting downside loses when trying to build wealth over time cannot be understated. Adding in more assets classes like low volatility equities, alternatives and hedged international and emerging market strategies can help build back the needed downside protection in portfolios.
This session develops a greater understanding of Optimal Capture Ratio, a way to illustrate the importance of downside protection; understand how equity assets are positioned today and where the risks reside; how style box equity portfolio construction has lost its downside protection over time; how to build back in downside protection into an equity portfolio. Treasury yields vs. S&P 500. Buy and Sell vs Buy and Hold. History of the Markets.

Attendees will understand what major investment themes are impacting the US and in turn how those themes impact the global economy. Session 3C: RMF - New Case for Reverse Mortgages (HECMs)


Leading retirement researchers have concluded that today's low-cost reverse mortgage can improve a client's retirement income efficiency, retirement sustainability and their legacy. Attendees will receive current information on the pros and cons of reverse mortgages, especially the lower costs and changes in eligibility criteria. Four common uses of reverse mortgages will be reviewed.
Upon completion of the program, attendees will be able to provide valuable advice to older clients on how a reverse mortgage may help: (1) educate older clients on the pros and cons of FHA-insured reverse mortgages, including recent reductions to initial costs; (2) present HECM solutions to clients tailored to their particular circumstances. Discussing the mistakes reflected in the estate planning of a number of celebrities, this session provides practical insights on how these mistakes illustrate ways that you can improve your average client’s estate planning.

Gain a greater understanding as to why personal property dispositions are one of the greatest sources of estate conflict and how to reduce the potential for that conflict; why dying without a Will creates disasters for surviving family - even with lower valued estates; why every adult of every age should execute properly drafted General Powers of Attorney or Medical Directives.
